What Is The French Paradox?
The French
Paradox discusses about the observation that French people have low
rate of heart disease and heart attacks, even though French people
have a diet full of fat. Back in 1992 scientist called Dr. Serge
Renaud, from Bordeaux University in France coined the term �The
French Paradox�. The average French consumed 108 grams of fat per
day from different types of animals in 2002, while the average
American comsumed only 72 grams. The French eat four times more
pork, 60 percent more cheese and almost four times as much butter.
Despite the fact
the French consume a little more fat then the American, French
people consume more saturated fat, while Americans consume fat in
the form of vegetable oil. However , back in 1999, 83 people out of
100,000 died, among males between the age 35-74, due to heart
disease in France, while in the US the number was 115 out of 100,000
according to data from the British Heart Foundation.
Scientists
believe that the reason for this is the red wine that the French
people consume daily. This theory was presents in 60 minutes
broadcast back in 1991. The program increased dramatically the
demand for red wines from different countries. The consumption was
that one of the components of red wine might be the reason for this
effect is resveratrol.
Resveratrol is
known for biologists as a compound that produced within plant and
protects them from fungus and bacteria, as if it was their natural
anti biotic. Resveratrol can be found as well in the pill of red
grapes, the same red grapes that are used to produce red wine. High
doses of resverarol have been linked to cancer prevention and life
extension in living species.
Even though
resveratrol may have a phenomenal health effects on a living
creatures, the concentration in red wine seems to low to be that
affective when it comes to the French paradox. Other factors must be
taken into account.
- French people
eat more fish,
- They eat more
slowly. It lets the body the time to start digesting before more
food comes in.
- The French diet
has less sugar then the American diet. American low fat foods often
contain large amounts of sugar.
- French people usually don�t snack between meals.
- Many of the
American food items such as deep fried food, snack foods and sodas
consider to be unhealthy.
